The movie’s tagline is: “Live Boldly. Live Well. Just Live.” Yet, Will does quite the opposite. The entire premise rests on the belief that life with a disability is not worth living. In spite of each of the characters in Will’s life trying to persuade him otherwise, the fact remains that Moyes imagines a world in which disability is synonymous with misery and assisted suicide is the only solution. And in the book, amidst all this drama, Will never narrates. He speaks, but in so many ways, is voiceless. Everyone discusses him ― to his face, behind his back ― as though he isn’t there.

We are of course keen for disabled storylines to enter mainstream culture, but Me Before You is misleading and inaccurate. It spreads jarring messages about life as a disabled person to the public. With its fatal ending, Hollywood is again telling people like me that it’s better to choose death than live as a disabled person. It’s saying my life isn’t worth it.

Me Before Youは、ミスリーディングで不正確である。
この映画は、障害のある人の生について世の中に誤ったメッセージを広げる。
障害のある人が死を選ぶという結末によって、
ハリウッドはまたしても私のような障害のある人々に向けて、
障害のある人として生きるより死を選択する方が良い、と言っている。
つまり、私の人生は生きるに値しない、と。
The representation of life as a disabled person in Me Before You is a blurred reflection of the truth. Director Thea Sharrock said that she wanted to avoid portraying the realities of living with a disability in the film, such as being hoisted into a bath or being helped to clean, because she wanted to make Will’s disability “more normal”. In doing so, she strips the character and film of any real meaning.
Sharrock is right that disability needs to be normalised, but that will only happen when people like her stop leaving my reality on the cutting room floor.

たとえば、バスタブに抱えて運ばれるとか、体を洗ってもらうとか。
障害と共に生活する現実をありのままに描くことを避けたかったと語っている。
それによって監督は主人公ウィルの障害を「よりノーマル」なものにしたかったというが、
結果的には、主人公のキャラクターからも映画からもリアルな意味がはく奪されてしまった。
障害がノーマルであたりまえのものとなる必要があるというのは
Sharrockの言うとおりだが、
それが実現するのは、
彼女のような人たちが映画の編集室に私の現実を置き去りにするのを止めた時だ。
